Mare Reproductive Services

Breeding Soundness Exams

Comprising a physical exam, vaginal exam, and reproductive tract ultrasound, mare breeding soundness exams are intended to provide a comprehensive evaluation of a mare’s reproductive health and suitability for breeding.

In-House Diagnostics

Fen Vet Equine Reproduction is proud to offer a range of in-house diagnostic services for mares including uterine cytology, uterine culture and antimicrobial sensitivity, blood progesterone, foal IgG and more.

Breeding by Artificial Insemination - Fresh & Frozen

We offer artificial insemination services for mares, utilizing on-site fresh semen, fresh cooled semen, and frozen semen. Breeding includes cycle tracking and manipulation to ensure optimal timing of breeding, as well as post-breeding management and pregnancy diagnosis.

Cycle Evaluations

We offer detailed cycle evaluations for mares to monitor and assess their reproductive cycle, ensuring optimal timing for breeding.

Pregnancy Ultrasounds

We provide pregnancy diagnosis ultrasounds for mares, including twin reduction services, to ensure the health and well-being of both the mare and her developing foal.

Embryo Transfer

Our embryo transfer program includes transfer of fresh and frozen ICSI embryos, to support advanced reproductive techniques and enhance breeding opportunities. Using precise cycle management, we coordinate embryo collection, evaluation, and transfer into synchronized recipient mares, followed by post-transfer monitoring to support successful pregnancy establishment and healthy embryo development.

Oocyte Pickup Procedure/ICSI

Our mare ovum pick-up (OPU) program offers advanced reproductive options for mares that may not be candidates for traditional breeding. In partnership with Viagen, recovered oocytes are sent to their laboratory for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and embryo production. Viagen then returns the resulting frozen embryos to our clinic, where we perform embryo transfer to recipient mares and provide ongoing reproductive management to support pregnancy establishment.

Recipient Mare Information

For the 2026 breeding season, our in-house recipient mare herd will be reserved for emergency situations only and will be extremely limited in availability. As a result, Embryo Transfer (ET) and ICSI cases will now require clients to source their own recipient mares. Client-owned or privately sourced recipients must meet our health, age, reproductive, and management requirements and will be evaluated and approved by our veterinary team prior to use.

We are happy to provide: Recipient mare screening and approval; cycle synchronization and management; embryo transfer and pregnancy diagnosis; and post-transfer recipient mare monitoring and support.

Foaling Services

We offer foaling out services for mares that we have bred in the previous year or will be rebreeding in the current breeding season. Foaling services include foal alert placement, mammary secretion monitoring, 24-hour on-site staff, large foaling stalls with cameras for continuous monitoring, and outdoor turnout. Foalings are attended by on-site staff, and a veterinarian is called in if the foaling attendant has any concerns. The mare and foal are observed to ensure crucial milestones are reached, and a new foal exam and in-house IgG test are performed on every foal to ensure each one is healthy and have the best start to life.

Mare Care

Mares at our facility are housed in individual outdoor pens and provided with high-quality hay and a daily ration balancer to support optimal health and reproductive performance. Indoor stall board is available, as well as indoor housing with outdoor daytime turnout.

Conditioning and Exercise Programs

In partnership with Central Alberta Equine Rehabilitation, mares housed with Fen Vet Equine Reproduction have access to exercise, conditioning, and rehabilitation services.
