At Fen Vet Equine Reproduction, we provide comprehensive stallion reproductive services designed to optimize fertility, preserve genetics and support successful breeding programs.
Breeding Soundness Exams
Breeding soundness examinations are a comprehensive evaluation of a stallion’s physical and reproductive health, semen quality, and breeding potential. This assessment comprises a physical examination, reproductive tract examination, as well as semen collection and analysis. These evaluations are intended to provide a thorough assessment of a stallion’s reproductive health and guide breeding and management decisions.
Phantom Training
We offer professional phantom training to help stallions learn to safely and reliably collect for artificial insemination. Our experienced team uses patient, low-stress techniques to build confidence, encourage proper behavior, and establish consistent collection habits, supporting long-term breeding success and handler safety.
Semen Collection (haul-in and live-in services available)
We provide professional semen collection services for both resident and haul-in stallions. Using safe, controlled handling and industry-standard techniques, our experienced team ensures efficient, reliable collections to support fresh breeding, semen evaluation, and further processing for shipping and freezing.
Semen Shipping – Fresh Cooled
We offer processing and shipping of fresh cooled semen to support breeding programs across North America. Semen extender testing is performed to determine how each individual stallion’s semen responds to different extenders and cooling protocols, allowing us to optimize longevity and fertility during transport and ensure the highest possible quality upon arrival.
Semen Freezing, Storage and Distribution
We provide full-service semen freezing, long-term storage, and distribution for stallions. As an SBS affiliated lab, we use industry-leading cryopreservation protocols and quality control, semen is processed and frozen to preserve fertility for future use. Stored semen can be shipped domestically or internationally upon request, supporting flexible, reliable breeding opportunities around the world.
Select Breeders Services (SBS) Affiliated Laboratory
SBS has been at the forefront of the equine semen freezing industry since its inception in 1987. The purpose of the SBS Affiliate Program is to improve the overall quality and consistency of frozen semen on the market, provide a network of distribution of frozen semen, and lead the application and development of the technology. SBS accomplishes these goals by providing each affiliate member with detailed standardized procedures for use in their own laboratories.
Stallion Care
Live-in stallions are housed in individual 24 x 24 outdoor pens with shelters and 8 ft fencing. Indoor board is available, as well as indoor housing with daytime turnout. Stallions receive a high-quality hay and daily ration balancer, with the ability to accommodate individualized grain and supplement programs.
Conditioning and Exercise Programs
In partnership with Central Alberta Equine Rehabilitation, stallions housed with Fen Vet Equine Reproduction have access to exercise, conditioning, and rehabilitation services.
